00:00:01.379 --> 00:00:07.559
Hi, friends and welcome once again to another amazing episode of forward into the past.

00:00:08.160 --> 00:00:10.710
I'm JC Rede, your host and narrator.

00:00:10.949 --> 00:00:20.399
And today we're diving into the next chapters in the 1915, Nick Carter mystery, The Suicide, or Nick Carter and the Lost Head.

00:00:21.050 --> 00:00:27.410
The Nick Carter character was a seminal figure in the development of detective fiction in the early 20th century.

00:00:27.769 --> 00:00:30.949
Particularly in the realm of story papers and dime novels.

00:00:31.489 --> 00:00:35.390
Created by John R Correale and Ormond G Smith.

00:00:35.840 --> 00:00:42.590
Nick Carter made his debut in 1886 in the novella, The Old Detectives Pupil.

00:00:43.240 --> 00:00:50.859
Nick Carter was a New York City private detective who employed brilliant deductive reasoning and forensic skills to solve crimes.

00:00:51.460 --> 00:00:58.479
He differed from previous literary detectives in that he was more physical and willing to use force when necessary.

00:00:59.130 --> 00:01:04.379
Carter frequently engaged in fist fights, shootouts and daring chases and escapes.

00:01:04.859 --> 00:01:11.310
This added an element of action and excitement that appealed to the working class readers of story papers and dime novels.

00:01:11.959 --> 00:01:17.120
The Nick Carter stories were published in a weekly story paper titled the New York weekly.

00:01:17.900 --> 00:01:20.719
With each installment costing just a nickel.

00:01:21.019 --> 00:01:25.370
The Nick Carter adventures provided affordable entertainment for the masses.

00:01:25.969 --> 00:01:37.109
The affordable pricing and action packed tales made the stories hugely popular with the New York Weekly's circulation reaching into the millions during its heyday.

00:01:37.760 --> 00:01:41.719
Nick Carter's influence extended beyond just the stories themselves.

00:01:41.900 --> 00:01:50.689
He became a cultural phenomenon with his name and image used to market all sorts of products from coffee to washing powder.

00:01:51.209 --> 00:01:57.750
There were Nick Carter clubs, theatrical productions, and even early motion pictures featuring the character.

00:01:58.439 --> 00:02:04.290
Kids playing a detective would often pretend to be Nick Carter on his latest case.

00:02:05.019 --> 00:02:08.650
While Nick Carter borrowed heavily from the works of Edgar Allen Poe.

00:02:09.219 --> 00:02:11.830
He blazed his own trail in the genre.

00:02:12.460 --> 00:02:21.879
Later fictional detectives like The Shadow, Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe had elements of the hard-boiled Nick Carter in their makeup.

00:02:22.530 --> 00:02:29.110
The character was also a major influence on pulp fiction and comic book detectives and superheroes.

00:02:29.469 --> 00:02:35.830
Nick Carter's DNA can be seen in everything from Batman to Jessica Jones.

00:02:36.580 --> 00:02:43.210
In many ways the Nick Carter dime novels represented a democratization of detective fiction.

00:02:43.689 --> 00:02:51.729
They took the genre out of the hands of the literary elite and made it popular entertainment for the working classes.

00:02:52.340 --> 00:03:01.610
Nick Carter may have started out as disposable pulp but he left an enduring mark on detective fiction that still resonates today.

00:03:02.259 --> 00:03:09.460
And let's just see how it still resonates as we continue the latest episode in the 1915 story.

00:03:10.060 --> 00:03:14.020
The suicide or Nick Carter and the Lost head.

00:03:16.270 --> 00:03:19.210
Chapter five, the woman in the case.

00:03:21.460 --> 00:03:25.780
Nick Carter entered the Ashburton Chambers soon after eight o'clock that evening.

00:03:26.409 --> 00:03:28.669
He did not send up his guard to Kate Crandall.

00:03:29.150 --> 00:03:33.650
He sauntered in and bought some cigars off a girl clerk in charge of the counter.

00:03:34.300 --> 00:03:36.639
While lighting one, he inquired carelessly.

00:03:37.289 --> 00:03:39.330
Have you seen Ralph Sheldon here this evening?

00:03:39.979 --> 00:03:40.580
Yes, sir.

00:03:40.733 --> 00:03:41.443
said the girl.

00:03:41.682 --> 00:03:43.182
He came in half an hour ago.

00:03:43.543 --> 00:03:45.073
I saw him talking with the clerk.

00:03:45.432 --> 00:03:46.812
I guess he went up to a suite.

00:03:47.462 --> 00:03:51.152
To the woman's suite thought, Nick recalling what Danny had reported.

00:03:51.663 --> 00:03:55.043
Then indifferently, he said, I heard today that Mr.

00:03:55.043 --> 00:03:56.062
Sheldon is living here.

00:03:56.712 --> 00:03:57.223
Yes, sir.

00:03:57.342 --> 00:03:58.573
He has a suite with Mr.

00:03:58.573 --> 00:03:59.682
Floyd on the third floor.

00:04:00.022 --> 00:04:01.703
They've been here about two months.

00:04:02.353 --> 00:04:03.133
Phillip Floyd?

00:04:03.712 --> 00:04:06.473
Yes, sir, but I don't think he is here today.

00:04:06.832 --> 00:04:08.483
He travels a good deal of the time.

00:04:08.752 --> 00:04:09.682
The clerk can tell you.

00:04:10.332 --> 00:04:12.763
It's not material, said Nick turning away.

00:04:13.413 --> 00:04:21.572
He sauntered out and around to the side door of the house, throwing away his cigar then entered and took the elevator saying to the man in charge.

00:04:22.223 --> 00:04:22.463
Ms.

00:04:22.463 --> 00:04:23.423
Crandall's apartments.

00:04:24.072 --> 00:04:25.002
Third floor, sir.

00:04:25.178 --> 00:04:25.988
Directed the man.

00:04:26.108 --> 00:04:27.338
Number 98 to the right.

00:04:27.988 --> 00:04:28.949
Number 98.

00:04:29.105 --> 00:04:29.735
Queried Nick.

00:04:30.365 --> 00:04:32.086
I thought Ralph Sheldon had that suite.

00:04:32.735 --> 00:04:33.216
No, sir.

00:04:33.396 --> 00:04:33.935
He and Mr.

00:04:33.966 --> 00:04:36.425
Floyd have number 94 rear corridor.

00:04:37.076 --> 00:04:38.156
Nick did not reply.

00:04:38.636 --> 00:04:41.485
He stepped out onto the third floor and turned to the right.

00:04:42.235 --> 00:04:44.365
The dimly lighted corridor was deserted.

00:04:44.886 --> 00:04:56.826
It ran parallel with one side of the house and led to a stairway in a narrow passage back of some of the rear apartments, evidently a passage and stairway designed for the use of servants and the removal of sweepings and rubbish.

00:04:57.475 --> 00:05:01.615
Nick found that Kate Crandall's suite was the last in the side corridor.

00:05:02.185 --> 00:05:05.276
He paused at the door and listened, hearing nothing.

00:05:05.846 --> 00:05:08.185
And he then crouched and peered through the keyhole.

00:05:08.875 --> 00:05:14.196
He could see a thread of light under an inner door, which precluded hearing voices from within.

00:05:14.615 --> 00:05:17.076
And he then knocked sharply on one of the panels.

00:05:17.725 --> 00:05:18.865
There was no response.

00:05:19.516 --> 00:05:23.865
Nick waited a few moments then knocked again, which had the desired result.

00:05:24.516 --> 00:05:27.156
The door was opened by the woman he was seeking.

00:05:27.805 --> 00:05:30.745
She was not conventionally clad for receiving visitors.

00:05:31.165 --> 00:05:34.735
Her fine figure was enveloped in a voluminous woolen wrapper.

00:05:35.185 --> 00:05:38.036
Her feet were thrust into a pair of worsted slippers.

00:05:38.755 --> 00:05:41.696
She appeared to have been on the verge of getting ready for bed.

00:05:42.386 --> 00:05:45.656
She drew back with a look of surprise on her darkly, handsome face.

00:05:46.305 --> 00:05:46.846
Goodness.

00:05:46.906 --> 00:05:47.805
She exclaimed.

00:05:48.346 --> 00:05:49.935
I thought one of the hall boys knocked.

00:05:50.716 --> 00:05:51.435
What do you want?

00:05:52.086 --> 00:05:53.466
An interview with you.

00:05:54.005 --> 00:05:55.386
Nick tersely informed her.

00:05:55.805 --> 00:05:58.386
Don't pretend Miss Crandall that you do not recognize me.

00:05:58.716 --> 00:06:01.685
A woman never forgets the face of a person she dislikes.

00:06:02.336 --> 00:06:03.745
I did not so pretend.

00:06:03.915 --> 00:06:04.605
Kate retorted.

00:06:04.786 --> 00:06:06.016
I knew you immediately, Mr.

00:06:06.016 --> 00:06:09.346
Carter, but I cannot imagine why you want an interview with me.

00:06:09.995 --> 00:06:11.886
I will presently inform you said Nick.

00:06:12.365 --> 00:06:13.086
May I come in.

00:06:13.735 --> 00:06:14.305
Certainly.

00:06:14.956 --> 00:06:15.675
You are alone?

00:06:16.305 --> 00:06:19.036
Of course, I am nearly always alone here.

00:06:19.396 --> 00:06:21.795
I have a headache and was thinking of going to bed.

00:06:21.956 --> 00:06:23.185
Kate glibly asserted.

00:06:23.836 --> 00:06:28.935
That is why perhaps you were so long in answering my knock, Nick remarked more sharply, eyeing her.

00:06:29.586 --> 00:06:30.245
Precisely.

00:06:30.725 --> 00:06:31.355
Kate nodded.

00:06:31.896 --> 00:06:33.696
I was near not answering it at all.

00:06:34.045 --> 00:06:35.545
I am glad I did however.

00:06:36.125 --> 00:06:37.716
As for disliking you, Mr.

00:06:37.716 --> 00:06:39.216
Carter, that is absurd.

00:06:39.875 --> 00:06:43.406
I bear, you know, ill will, for the part you played in that Maybrick affair.

00:06:43.925 --> 00:06:45.846
I was not seriously involved in it.

00:06:46.386 --> 00:06:49.055
I always make it a point not to lay myself liable.

00:06:49.706 --> 00:06:50.696
To the law, you mean?

00:06:51.346 --> 00:06:52.396
To the law, certainly.

00:06:52.605 --> 00:06:53.685
She bluntly admitted.

00:06:54.045 --> 00:06:55.096
What else would I mean?

00:06:55.786 --> 00:06:57.555
I'll keep out of the grabnet of the law.

00:06:57.586 --> 00:06:57.826
Mr.

00:06:57.826 --> 00:06:59.475
Carter, you can safely bet on that.

00:07:00.125 --> 00:07:05.196
Nick wondered whether it was true or only a bluff designed to dispel his suspicions.

00:07:05.855 --> 00:07:12.286
He had followed her into an attractively furnished parlor where he instantly detected the odor of cigarette smoke.

00:07:13.076 --> 00:07:23.665
He wondered too, whether he really had found her alone or whether some male visitor possibly Ralph Sheldon had hurriedly concealed himself in one of the adjoining rooms.

00:07:24.315 --> 00:07:25.005
Have a chair.

00:07:25.173 --> 00:07:25.802
Kate added.

00:07:26.452 --> 00:07:27.142
Really Mr.

00:07:27.142 --> 00:07:31.043
Carter, I am quite pleased to see you, for all you think I dislike you.

00:07:31.692 --> 00:07:33.312
What do you want to interview me about?

00:07:33.733 --> 00:07:35.653
You have piqued my curiosity.

00:07:36.302 --> 00:07:37.593
You said you were alone here.

00:07:38.242 --> 00:07:40.552
Nick remarked instead of answering her question.

00:07:41.202 --> 00:07:43.572
So I was until you came in.

00:07:44.223 --> 00:07:44.793
Really.

00:07:45.512 --> 00:07:48.033
Of course, why should I deceive you?

00:07:48.682 --> 00:07:50.213
That's the question, said Nick.

00:07:50.692 --> 00:07:51.802
I think that you have.

00:07:52.452 --> 00:07:55.213
He had leaned nearer to her while taking a chair.

00:07:55.302 --> 00:08:00.413
So near that his head almost touched hers, for she then was seated.

00:08:01.062 --> 00:08:03.612
That I have deceived you.

00:08:03.942 --> 00:08:05.502
She asked gazing at him.

00:08:06.153 --> 00:08:06.663
Surely.

00:08:07.312 --> 00:08:08.273
How so.

00:08:08.923 --> 00:08:12.223
Some person was smoking a cigarette here within a very few minutes.

00:08:12.872 --> 00:08:14.942
Kate Crandall laughed and tossed her head.

00:08:15.653 --> 00:08:16.353
Dear me?

00:08:16.562 --> 00:08:18.333
Is that why you think so?

00:08:18.543 --> 00:08:19.892
She said derisively.

00:08:20.432 --> 00:08:21.153
Really Mr.

00:08:21.153 --> 00:08:24.932
Carter, you are not near as keen and clever as you think you are.

00:08:25.583 --> 00:08:26.062
No?

00:08:26.713 --> 00:08:27.583
Far from it.

00:08:27.952 --> 00:08:31.642
It was cute in you of course, to detect cigarette smoke so quickly.

00:08:32.062 --> 00:08:34.072
But I was the smoker.

00:08:34.613 --> 00:08:38.273
You will find the end of my cigarette in the cuspidor if you care to take a look.

00:08:38.923 --> 00:08:39.913
Here is the box.

00:08:40.562 --> 00:08:42.783
Kate took it from the pocket of her woolen robe.

00:08:43.432 --> 00:08:44.003
Have one.

00:08:44.543 --> 00:08:46.972
They seem to steady one's nerves for a time.

00:08:47.393 --> 00:08:49.043
It may sharpen you up a bit.

00:08:49.692 --> 00:08:51.732
My wits don't need the grindstone.

00:08:51.913 --> 00:08:53.232
Nick replied dryly.

00:08:53.883 --> 00:08:54.423
No?

00:08:55.052 --> 00:08:57.663
Queried Kate with her own tentative intonation.

00:08:58.312 --> 00:08:59.302
Far from it.

00:08:59.732 --> 00:09:01.232
Said Nick imitating her.

00:09:01.883 --> 00:09:04.432
You are the one who is not keen and clever.

00:09:05.102 --> 00:09:06.962
You were not the smoker, Ms.

00:09:06.962 --> 00:09:07.322
Crandall.

00:09:08.043 --> 00:09:10.202
When a woman has just smoked a cigarette.

00:09:10.623 --> 00:09:13.413
The scent of it may easily be detected in her hair.

00:09:14.163 --> 00:09:16.023
I smelled of yours when I sat down.

00:09:16.673 --> 00:09:17.903
Oh, indeed?

00:09:18.552 --> 00:09:22.033
Now having eliminated you, who was your visitor?

00:09:22.513 --> 00:09:24.102
Why did he hide when I knocked?

00:09:24.822 --> 00:09:28.212
I know of course that he did not depart or I should have seen him.

00:09:28.863 --> 00:09:34.363
Kate Crandall's mocking smile had given way to a frown, but it was not of long duration.

00:09:35.013 --> 00:09:36.663
You are very much mistaken.

00:09:36.663 --> 00:09:36.932
Mr.

00:09:36.932 --> 00:09:38.043
Carter, she replied.

00:09:38.462 --> 00:09:40.472
He left just before you arrived.

00:09:41.102 --> 00:09:46.232
If you think any person is concealed in my apartments, you are at Liberty to search them.

00:09:46.883 --> 00:09:47.482
No indeed.

00:09:47.633 --> 00:09:48.503
It is not material.

00:09:49.153 --> 00:09:52.663
I failed to see why you have an interest in me, or my visitor.

00:09:52.932 --> 00:09:53.832
Kate quickly added.

00:09:54.013 --> 00:09:54.793
Please explain.

00:09:55.123 --> 00:09:55.962
Why are you here?

00:09:56.263 --> 00:09:57.133
What have you to say?

00:09:57.783 --> 00:09:59.913
I want you to do most of the saying.

00:10:00.086 --> 00:10:02.936
Nick replied, tell me and give it to me straight.

00:10:03.505 --> 00:10:04.796
What do you know about Mr.

00:10:04.796 --> 00:10:05.745
Cyrus Darling?

00:10:06.395 --> 00:10:09.096
Kate Crandall heard him without a change of countenance.

00:10:09.745 --> 00:10:11.035
Well just now, Mr.

00:10:11.035 --> 00:10:12.895
Carter, I know nothing about him.

00:10:13.080 --> 00:10:14.070
She said pointedly.

00:10:14.669 --> 00:10:15.419
He's dead.

00:10:16.070 --> 00:10:18.379
What did you know about him when alive then?

00:10:18.562 --> 00:10:19.253
Nick demanded.

00:10:19.903 --> 00:10:20.592
Very little.

00:10:21.043 --> 00:10:22.003
So little Mr.

00:10:22.003 --> 00:10:23.923
Carter, that I'm quite ashamed of myself.

00:10:24.572 --> 00:10:25.263
Why so?

00:10:25.913 --> 00:10:29.783
Because when I discovered the truth, it was not at all to my liking.

00:10:30.432 --> 00:10:31.243
What truth?

00:10:31.893 --> 00:10:33.543
That he was a married man.

00:10:34.192 --> 00:10:36.923
Do you mean that you did not know it before he died?

00:10:37.572 --> 00:10:38.802
That is just what I mean.

00:10:39.452 --> 00:10:40.653
How long had you known him?

00:10:41.352 --> 00:10:42.732
Something like three months.

00:10:43.383 --> 00:10:44.403
Were you friends?

00:10:45.052 --> 00:10:46.342
The best of friends.

00:10:46.773 --> 00:10:50.283
I supposed in fact that we were to become something more.

00:10:50.932 --> 00:10:52.222
Kate significantly added.

00:10:52.873 --> 00:10:53.562
What do you mean?

00:10:54.212 --> 00:10:55.472
In other words, Mr.

00:10:55.472 --> 00:11:01.923
Carter, I suppose that Cyrus Darling was going to marry me and that I should roll in wealth for the rest of my life.

00:11:02.643 --> 00:11:05.552
Imagine my chagrin, dismay and disappointment.

00:11:05.552 --> 00:11:12.602
Therefore, when I learned that he had killed himself and that a wife was mourning his tragic end.

00:11:13.352 --> 00:11:13.982
Perdition.

00:11:14.293 --> 00:11:20.192
I could have cut off my two ears for having listened to his treacherous love avowals.

00:11:20.842 --> 00:11:33.503
Nick Carter now saw plainly that this woman had no intention of bolting, that she had taken a position she felt sure she could maintain, and that she was not to be easily frightened or intimidated.

00:11:34.253 --> 00:11:43.852
All this appeared in her darkly, glowing eyes, her look of covert, contempt, and defiance, and in the utter lack of anything like apprehension on her part.

00:11:44.503 --> 00:11:48.253
Nick gazed at her intently for a moment then asked bluntly.

00:11:48.903 --> 00:11:50.493
Do you expect me to believe Ms.

00:11:50.493 --> 00:11:54.003
Crandall, that you did not know Darling was married?

00:11:54.653 --> 00:11:56.393
I don't care whether you believe it, Mr.

00:11:56.393 --> 00:11:57.383
Carter or not.

00:11:57.503 --> 00:12:01.793
She deliberately answered meeting him eye to eye, while she lighted a cigarette.

00:12:02.442 --> 00:12:03.523
What is that to me?

00:12:03.883 --> 00:12:06.283
The fact is not altered by what you believe.

00:12:06.932 --> 00:12:07.893
It is a fact then.

00:12:08.543 --> 00:12:09.773
Yes positively.

00:12:10.423 --> 00:12:12.702
You are acquainted with Ralph Sheldon aren't you?

00:12:13.352 --> 00:12:13.923
I am.

00:12:14.572 --> 00:12:15.592
And Phillip Floyd.

00:12:16.283 --> 00:12:17.273
Well, yes.

00:12:17.923 --> 00:12:18.942
Are they friends of yours?

00:12:19.592 --> 00:12:20.552
I think so.

00:12:20.852 --> 00:12:21.962
Kate coolly nodded.

00:12:22.413 --> 00:12:23.913
I have no reason to doubt it.

00:12:24.562 --> 00:12:28.883
Why then did they not tell you that Darling was a married man?

00:12:29.302 --> 00:12:30.023
Nick demanded.

00:12:30.383 --> 00:12:31.163
They knew it.

00:12:31.812 --> 00:12:33.613
And they supposed that I knew it.

00:12:33.783 --> 00:12:34.952
Kate curtly explained.

00:12:35.283 --> 00:12:37.472
They had no idea that I was ignorant of it.

00:12:37.893 --> 00:12:40.082
They saw me with Darling only occasionally.

00:12:40.413 --> 00:12:42.962
And the attributed no special significance to it.

00:12:43.613 --> 00:12:44.092
No?

00:12:44.783 --> 00:12:47.332
Why should they, she added a bit sharply.

00:12:47.633 --> 00:12:49.582
Why should they meddle with my affairs?

00:12:49.972 --> 00:12:51.952
I wonder at your presuming to do so.

00:12:52.222 --> 00:12:57.802
Though I know of course that yours is a meddlesome business, and you are a prince of meddlers.

00:12:58.452 --> 00:12:59.503
What's it all about?

00:12:59.592 --> 00:13:00.403
What's the answer?

00:13:00.552 --> 00:13:02.682
What are you driving at anyway?

00:13:03.332 --> 00:13:04.352
You will learn in time.

00:13:04.533 --> 00:13:05.373
Nick informed her.

00:13:05.712 --> 00:13:10.393
If what you imply is true, then you were not used quite right by Darling.

00:13:11.043 --> 00:13:12.572
No quite the contrary.

00:13:13.222 --> 00:13:15.773
Why have you still an interest in his affairs then?

00:13:16.423 --> 00:13:17.503
In his affairs?

00:13:18.153 --> 00:13:19.062
That's what I said.

00:13:19.842 --> 00:13:20.482
Nonsense.

00:13:20.643 --> 00:13:22.023
I have no such interest.

00:13:22.322 --> 00:13:24.092
Kate declared with a stony stare.

00:13:24.722 --> 00:13:26.793
I have wiped his name off my slate.

00:13:27.442 --> 00:13:29.962
Who is your friend then who has such an interest?

00:13:30.743 --> 00:13:31.643
My friend?

00:13:32.123 --> 00:13:32.663
Yes.

00:13:33.293 --> 00:13:35.482
I don't understand you, snapped Kate.

00:13:35.842 --> 00:13:36.743
Come across plainly.

00:13:36.743 --> 00:13:36.982
Mr.

00:13:36.982 --> 00:13:39.113
Carter, if you wish me to continue this interview.

00:13:39.503 --> 00:13:41.753
I will not stand for any beating around the bush.

00:13:42.023 --> 00:13:43.312
What friend of mine do you mean?

00:13:43.962 --> 00:13:46.692
The man you talked with on the street a short time ago.

00:13:47.023 --> 00:13:47.893
Nick said bluntly.

00:13:48.312 --> 00:13:53.113
The man who told you he had seen my touring car at the Darling residence this afternoon.

00:13:53.763 --> 00:13:58.143
Kate Crandall's eyes dilated perceptibly under her knitted brows.

00:13:58.653 --> 00:14:00.842
The shot was evidently not expected.

00:14:01.143 --> 00:14:03.692
But it did not appear to disturb her seriously.

00:14:04.263 --> 00:14:05.552
She tossed away her cigarette.

00:14:05.582 --> 00:14:08.342
Nevertheless, asking a bit resentfully.

00:14:08.993 --> 00:14:10.763
What is it to you Carter anyway?

00:14:11.182 --> 00:14:13.552
Why are you putting me through the ringer in this fashion?

00:14:14.062 --> 00:14:15.202
What are you trying to dig up?

00:14:15.682 --> 00:14:18.952
I tell you right here and now that you've got nothing on me.

00:14:19.253 --> 00:14:22.643
My relations with Cyrus Darling were open and above board.

00:14:22.972 --> 00:14:25.283
He was the only one guilty of any duplicity.

00:14:25.702 --> 00:14:28.133
I was the one deceived and his wife.

00:14:28.783 --> 00:14:30.552
What are you out after anyway?

00:14:31.202 --> 00:14:32.552
You are evading my question.

00:14:32.740 --> 00:14:33.850
Nick said pointedly.

00:14:34.330 --> 00:14:35.080
What question?

00:14:35.730 --> 00:14:38.549
Who is the man with whom you talked this afternoon.

00:14:38.730 --> 00:14:39.389
Nick repeated.

00:14:39.870 --> 00:14:44.100
If you are strictly on the level, as you assert, you should be willing to tell me.

00:14:44.475 --> 00:14:47.155
Willing be hanged snapped Kate inelegantly.

00:14:47.875 --> 00:14:51.655
You make me tired Carter when you get one of these meddlesome wasps in your bonnet.

00:14:52.015 --> 00:14:56.066
Why, I am more than willing to tell you if you are really anxious to know.

00:14:56.716 --> 00:14:57.316
Tell me then.

00:14:57.966 --> 00:14:59.546
The man was Jim Dacey.

00:14:59.676 --> 00:15:01.015
A very good friend of mine.

00:15:01.173 --> 00:15:01.712
Said Kate.

00:15:02.033 --> 00:15:06.623
That's why he came to tell me that he had seen a car thought to be yours at the Darling residence.

00:15:06.893 --> 00:15:09.623
He even went and looked up the number to be sure of it.

00:15:10.273 --> 00:15:12.613
But why did he hasten to inform you?

00:15:13.263 --> 00:15:17.222
He feared that I might be involved in some way because of my relations with Darling.

00:15:17.432 --> 00:15:21.273
So he came to put me on my guard, Kate glibly explained.

00:15:21.692 --> 00:15:24.212
But there was no occasion, not the slightest occasion.

00:15:24.863 --> 00:15:25.822
Indeed.

00:15:26.472 --> 00:15:29.863
Not the slightest Kate forcibly repeated.

00:15:30.513 --> 00:15:31.773
Who is this man Dacey?

00:15:31.802 --> 00:15:33.123
And where does he hang out?

00:15:33.513 --> 00:15:36.572
Nick then inquired, not yet in a position to contradict the woman.

00:15:37.322 --> 00:15:39.102
Why was he going to the Darling residence?

00:15:39.482 --> 00:15:40.623
What is his interest there?

00:15:40.932 --> 00:15:41.712
Why did he.

00:15:41.903 --> 00:15:42.923
Stop a moment.

00:15:43.403 --> 00:15:45.802
Kate exclaimed lurching forward in her chair.

00:15:46.582 --> 00:15:50.003
What do you think I am Carter, an information bureau?

00:15:50.523 --> 00:15:51.863
I'll stand for this no longer.

00:15:52.403 --> 00:15:54.592
I don't know what you suspect nor care.

00:15:54.753 --> 00:15:57.663
And you evidently don't intend to enlighten me.

00:15:58.263 --> 00:16:01.472
It's a mighty poor rule that won't work both ways.

00:16:01.952 --> 00:16:03.722
I've told you all I'm going to tell you.

00:16:04.322 --> 00:16:11.072
If you want to learn more of Cyrus Darling, or of Jim Dacey or of Sheldon or Floyd, go and ask them.

00:16:11.552 --> 00:16:13.202
You'll get no more out of me.

00:16:13.852 --> 00:16:15.202
Nick saw that she meant it.

00:16:15.852 --> 00:16:18.613
Wait and see, he remarked rising.

00:16:19.263 --> 00:16:20.013
I can wait.

00:16:20.186 --> 00:16:20.966
Kate retorted.

00:16:21.206 --> 00:16:22.946
Go elsewhere with your questions.

00:16:23.596 --> 00:16:25.875
That is precisely what I shall do.

00:16:26.525 --> 00:16:28.206
Go ahead, then it's up to you.

00:16:28.326 --> 00:16:29.676
Go where you please.

00:16:30.216 --> 00:16:31.775
I am going to bed.

00:16:33.775 --> 00:16:36.056
Chapter six birds of a feather.

00:16:38.056 --> 00:16:44.505
Nick Carter had an object in not revealing his suspicions to Kate Crandall and attempting to force a different story from her.

00:16:45.155 --> 00:16:51.426
He had seen plainly that such an attempt would be useless that the woman felt secure in the position she had taken.

00:16:51.816 --> 00:16:54.125
And was prepared to stick to her statements.

00:16:54.775 --> 00:16:56.696
Nick believed very few of them however.

00:16:57.265 --> 00:17:06.566
He keenly realized, nevertheless, that they ordinarily would appear perfectly plausible, that a woman is always given the benefit of a doubt in such cases.

00:17:06.865 --> 00:17:14.645
And that her story would be very generally accepted unless he could find positive evidence with which to refute it.

00:17:15.215 --> 00:17:16.895
There is only one way it can be done.

00:17:17.405 --> 00:17:20.226
That's by producing the supposed suicide himself.

00:17:20.826 --> 00:17:23.046
Nick decided a bit grimly after leaving her.

00:17:23.675 --> 00:17:26.915
She was expecting my visit and had prepared herself for it.

00:17:27.425 --> 00:17:29.125
That was as plain as twice two.

00:17:29.855 --> 00:17:36.675
I scored one point on her, nevertheless, that she was not expecting and which may prove to be her undoing.

00:17:37.326 --> 00:17:42.516
She certainly was rattled for a moment when she learned that I knew of Dacey's doings.

00:17:43.236 --> 00:17:46.215
It forced her to come across with a plausible explanation.

00:17:46.935 --> 00:17:53.506
Not having anticipated that contingency however, there may be a weak spot in her arrangements with Sheldon or Floyd.

00:17:54.016 --> 00:17:55.066
I'll try to find it.

00:17:55.605 --> 00:17:59.806
I'll hunt up Sheldon before she can communicate with him and put him on his guard.

00:18:00.455 --> 00:18:03.635
I will see whether he will tell precisely the same story.

00:18:04.286 --> 00:18:06.740
Rear corridor, suite number 94, eh?

00:18:07.530 --> 00:18:08.605
ah this must be the way.

00:18:09.256 --> 00:18:14.516
Hastening through several diverging corridors, Nick had entered one leading to the rear of the house.

00:18:15.056 --> 00:18:20.395
He would not delay to hunt up Chick and Patsy being anxious to find the subject as quickly as possible.

00:18:20.726 --> 00:18:27.685
And it was less than five minutes after his parting from Kate Crandall when Nick arrived at the door of Ralph Sheldon's apartments.

00:18:28.346 --> 00:18:30.415
He listened vainly then knocked.

00:18:31.066 --> 00:18:33.165
It brought an immediate response.

00:18:33.816 --> 00:18:34.385
Come in.

00:18:35.036 --> 00:18:38.105
Nick entered the parlor of an attractively furnished suite.

00:18:38.885 --> 00:18:42.455
A table covered with books and newspapers occupied the middle of the room.

00:18:42.996 --> 00:18:59.596
Amid them stood a library lamp with a large drooping silk shade of Nile green color, which deflected the light upon and immediately around the table, leaving other parts of the room in semi obscurity, causing Nick to think at first sight that it was only dimly lighted.

00:19:00.246 --> 00:19:05.256
In the bright glow, close to the table, however, sat the solitary occupant of the room.

00:19:05.955 --> 00:19:14.306
He was lounging in a large armchair with his slippered feet in another, and his tall figure wrapped in a long house robe.

00:19:14.945 --> 00:19:21.935
He seemed to be a man of 50 of refined appearance with hair and beard, slightly shot with gray.

00:19:22.566 --> 00:19:29.776
He wore black rimmed glasses and was reading a book over which he gazed, inquiringly, when the detective entered.

00:19:30.425 --> 00:19:35.105
Sheldon himself, thought Nick recalling Nancy Nordeck's description of the man.

00:19:35.885 --> 00:19:37.415
Alone and absorbed in a book.

00:19:37.715 --> 00:19:40.976
It's odds then that I am ahead of any warning from Kate Crandall.

00:19:41.526 --> 00:19:43.756
She certainly has not been here since I left her.

00:19:44.405 --> 00:19:48.236
These conclusions flashed through Nick's mind while he bowed and said.

00:19:49.016 --> 00:19:50.185
I am looking for Mr.

00:19:50.185 --> 00:19:51.205
Floyd or Mr.

00:19:51.205 --> 00:19:51.596
Sheldon.

00:19:52.046 --> 00:19:53.816
You are one or the other, I infer.

00:19:54.465 --> 00:19:55.455
My name is Sheldon.

00:19:55.816 --> 00:19:57.586
He replied drawing up in his chair.

00:19:57.758 --> 00:19:58.057
Mr.

00:19:58.057 --> 00:20:00.907
Floyd is out just now, but he may return at any moment.

00:20:01.387 --> 00:20:02.258
What is your business?

00:20:02.907 --> 00:20:05.548
I want a little information, which I think you or Mr.

00:20:05.548 --> 00:20:06.657
Floyd can give me.

00:20:07.307 --> 00:20:08.147
Oh, certainly.

00:20:08.508 --> 00:20:09.377
Sit down Mr.

00:20:09.377 --> 00:20:09.728
er.

00:20:10.377 --> 00:20:10.798
Carter.

00:20:11.127 --> 00:20:11.788
Put in Nick.

00:20:12.448 --> 00:20:13.557
I am a detective.

00:20:14.238 --> 00:20:14.478
Not...

00:20:15.018 --> 00:20:16.008
Nick Carter.

00:20:16.678 --> 00:20:19.798
Faltered Sheldon inquiringly with a look of surprise.

00:20:20.448 --> 00:20:20.988
Yes.

00:20:21.587 --> 00:20:22.968
I see that you have heard of me.

00:20:24.357 --> 00:20:25.107
Who has not?

00:20:25.528 --> 00:20:27.387
And Sheldon smiled significantly.

00:20:28.137 --> 00:20:30.897
But I do not recall having seen you before.

00:20:31.528 --> 00:20:32.577
I am glad to meet you.

00:20:33.228 --> 00:20:38.538
He certainly spoke as if pleased, but his smile appeared forced and his cheeks were pale.

00:20:39.258 --> 00:20:48.798
When he extended his hand without rising, moreover Nick detected that it was trembling slightly and then noted that it felt abnormally cold and clammy.

00:20:49.448 --> 00:20:51.008
I am glad to find you here.

00:20:51.428 --> 00:20:53.528
He replied, taking a chair near the table.

00:20:54.188 --> 00:20:57.938
You were, I am told, a friend of the late Cyrus Darling.

00:20:58.587 --> 00:21:00.028
Yes in a way.

00:21:00.174 --> 00:21:04.105
Said, Sheldon settling back in his chair and fixedly eyeing the detective.

00:21:04.755 --> 00:21:05.505
In a way?

00:21:05.674 --> 00:21:06.305
Echoed Nick.

00:21:06.934 --> 00:21:07.954
What do you mean by that?

00:21:08.605 --> 00:21:11.125
I mean that I only met him a few times.

00:21:11.291 --> 00:21:12.192
Sheldon explained.

00:21:12.612 --> 00:21:15.132
I called once at his residence in company with Mr.

00:21:15.132 --> 00:21:17.501
Floyd, but we did not find him at home.

00:21:18.152 --> 00:21:23.102
Nick could not deny that this coincided exactly with what Nancy Nordeck had told him.

00:21:23.751 --> 00:21:25.221
I did not know him well.

00:21:25.402 --> 00:21:26.122
Sheldon added.

00:21:26.541 --> 00:21:28.642
Floyd was much better acquainted with them.

00:21:29.362 --> 00:21:30.261
What about him, Mr.

00:21:30.261 --> 00:21:31.942
Carter, that you are seeking information.

00:21:32.592 --> 00:21:33.971
I have been employed to do so.

00:21:34.622 --> 00:21:35.221
By whom?

00:21:35.872 --> 00:21:36.471
His wife.

00:21:37.122 --> 00:21:37.902
For what reason?

00:21:37.902 --> 00:21:38.832
What is the occasion?

00:21:39.481 --> 00:21:40.652
Have you no idea?

00:21:40.825 --> 00:21:42.865
Nick inquired with sharper scrutiny.

00:21:43.555 --> 00:21:43.974
I?

00:21:44.454 --> 00:21:45.444
Not the slightest.

00:21:45.984 --> 00:21:47.335
Sheldon quickly shook his head.

00:21:47.845 --> 00:21:50.244
I knew nothing about Darling's personal affairs.

00:21:50.634 --> 00:21:52.884
I know only that he shot himself and.

00:21:53.092 --> 00:21:54.531
Ah, here's Floyd now.

00:21:54.664 --> 00:21:55.805
He abruptly digressed.

00:21:56.454 --> 00:21:57.954
You are just in time, Phil.

00:21:58.404 --> 00:22:00.444
Shake hands with Mr.

00:22:00.444 --> 00:22:02.904
Nicholas Carter, the famous detective.

00:22:03.565 --> 00:22:06.474
He is after information about Cyrus Darling.

00:22:06.984 --> 00:22:09.384
You can tell him perhaps what he wants to know.

00:22:10.035 --> 00:22:12.494
Floyd had entered while Sheldon was speaking.

00:22:12.714 --> 00:22:16.375
And Nick detected an accent of relief in the latter's voice.

00:22:17.025 --> 00:22:25.244
Floyd appeared to be about 30, a compactly built man under medium height, clad in a stylish plaid suit and soft felt hat.

00:22:25.964 --> 00:22:32.565
He was very dark, his hair thick and curly his mustache long and drooping completely hiding his mouth.

00:22:33.285 --> 00:22:42.494
He wore gold rimmed glasses through which he fixed a pair of searching black eyes upon the detective, bowing indifferently and not tendering his hand.

00:22:43.144 --> 00:22:44.075
Pleased to know you, Mr.

00:22:44.075 --> 00:22:44.525
Carter.

00:22:44.698 --> 00:22:47.357
he said sitting directly opposite Nick at the table.

00:22:48.008 --> 00:22:49.748
Information about Cyrus Darling eh?

00:22:50.585 --> 00:22:51.095
He's dead.

00:22:51.585 --> 00:22:52.575
What's the big idea.

00:22:52.694 --> 00:22:53.924
What do you want to know about him?

00:22:54.575 --> 00:22:59.375
There was a sinister flippancy in this man's voice and manner that Nick did not fancy.

00:22:59.944 --> 00:23:10.025
Like Nancy Nordeck too, he somehow felt that he had seen Phillip Floyd before, but he could not even vaguely determine when or where.

00:23:10.674 --> 00:23:14.605
Nick did feel positive however that Floyd was bent upon putting up a bluff.

00:23:14.904 --> 00:23:22.265
That he was by far the more nervy man of these two and that Sheldon was much relieved by his timely arrival.

00:23:22.835 --> 00:23:28.805
All this presently impelled, Nick to venture a counter bluff, which proved more effective than he anticipated.

00:23:29.454 --> 00:23:31.224
I want to know anything about him, Mr.

00:23:31.224 --> 00:23:32.305
Floyd, that you can tell me.

00:23:32.478 --> 00:23:33.137
He replied.

00:23:33.788 --> 00:23:35.468
But what's the big idea.

00:23:35.948 --> 00:23:38.468
Floyd repeated staring steadily at Nick.

00:23:38.798 --> 00:23:41.557
Why are you seeking information about a dead man?

00:23:41.978 --> 00:23:43.657
Is there anything wrong with his record?

00:23:44.357 --> 00:23:45.978
That is what I wish to learn.

00:23:46.627 --> 00:23:47.738
Who put you on the job?

00:23:48.458 --> 00:23:49.028
His wife.

00:23:49.627 --> 00:23:50.317
Why so?

00:23:50.617 --> 00:23:51.998
Why has she gone up in the air?

00:23:52.147 --> 00:23:53.407
What does she suspect?

00:23:53.589 --> 00:23:55.269
Floyd glibly inquired.

00:23:55.920 --> 00:23:58.049
It does not much matter what she thinks.

00:23:58.589 --> 00:23:59.609
Nick slowly answered.

00:24:00.000 --> 00:24:02.849
That is neither here nor there at this stage of the game.

00:24:03.500 --> 00:24:03.740
Huh.

00:24:04.250 --> 00:24:05.269
Is that so?

00:24:05.920 --> 00:24:08.380
What I suspect is much more material.

00:24:09.019 --> 00:24:11.269
I came here to ask a few questions, Mr.

00:24:11.269 --> 00:24:14.390
Floyd, not to answer a string of inquiries from you.

00:24:14.759 --> 00:24:16.710
Please bear that in mind.

00:24:17.359 --> 00:24:21.259
Nick's voice had taken on a subtle and somewhat threatening ring.

00:24:22.039 --> 00:24:26.119
He gazed at his hearers with a sharper gleam in his impressive eyes.

00:24:26.750 --> 00:24:35.990
He saw Floyd frown quickly while Sheldon's bearded face grew quite haggard and ghastly in the greenish light cast upon it through the drooping silk shade.

00:24:36.640 --> 00:24:37.980
Bear it in mind, eh?

00:24:38.670 --> 00:24:40.109
Floyd curtly questioned.

00:24:40.759 --> 00:24:42.799
That's what I said, Nick returned.

00:24:43.450 --> 00:24:44.799
Why do you speak like that?

00:24:45.400 --> 00:24:48.430
I'm not likely to answer questions, put to me in that fashion.

00:24:49.079 --> 00:24:49.799
Oh, yes, you are.

00:24:50.279 --> 00:24:51.029
Nick retorted.

00:24:51.420 --> 00:24:54.420
Otherwise I shall take steps to compel you to answer them.

00:24:54.869 --> 00:24:56.430
Bear that in mind also.

00:24:57.079 --> 00:25:00.019
Floyd jerked his chair, nearer the table.

00:25:00.670 --> 00:25:01.539
See here, Mr.

00:25:01.539 --> 00:25:03.279
Carter, what's the meaning of this?

00:25:03.479 --> 00:25:04.648
He demanded aggressively.

00:25:05.189 --> 00:25:07.199
What do you suspect that you come here and.

00:25:07.412 --> 00:25:07.951
Nevermind.

00:25:07.951 --> 00:25:08.672
What I suspect.

00:25:08.811 --> 00:25:09.592
Nick interrupted.

00:25:09.848 --> 00:25:11.199
What I want to know, Mr.

00:25:11.199 --> 00:25:16.148
Floyd is what sort of game you and Sheldon and Kate Crandall are playing.

00:25:16.568 --> 00:25:18.638
How does Jim Dacey figure into it?

00:25:19.098 --> 00:25:21.979
What are you scheming to get from Cyrus Darling by.

00:25:22.175 --> 00:25:22.955
Get from him.

00:25:22.986 --> 00:25:23.705
Be hanged.

00:25:23.882 --> 00:25:24.961
Floyd cut in sharply.

00:25:25.471 --> 00:25:26.761
You are talking through your hat.

00:25:26.892 --> 00:25:28.832
Cyrus Darling is dead and buried.

00:25:29.082 --> 00:25:30.071
No, he isn't.

00:25:30.321 --> 00:25:31.041
Not dead.

00:25:31.731 --> 00:25:33.172
Not by a long chalk.

00:25:33.325 --> 00:25:34.525
Nick's sternly declared.

00:25:34.674 --> 00:25:38.184
He is alive very much alive as I shall presently convince you.

00:25:38.664 --> 00:25:40.644
I know that without your informing me.

00:25:41.095 --> 00:25:45.414
I know too, that you fellows are responsible for his supposed suicide.

00:25:45.805 --> 00:25:46.884
I know that you.

00:25:47.535 --> 00:25:49.095
Nick stopped short at that point.

00:25:49.755 --> 00:25:53.115
Floyd's right-hand suddenly appeared above the edge of the table.

00:25:53.694 --> 00:25:58.105
It held a revolver aimed point blank at the detectives breast.

00:25:58.755 --> 00:26:01.545
You know too much Carter for your own good.

00:26:01.714 --> 00:26:03.875
He hissed viciously between his teeth.

00:26:04.525 --> 00:26:08.694
If you move foot or finger, I'll send a bullet through your heart.

00:26:09.345 --> 00:26:11.684
Sit quiet, Sheldon and keep your mouth shut.

00:26:12.335 --> 00:26:17.345
Nick Carter did not appear at all disturbed by the sudden threatening turn of the situation.

00:26:18.125 --> 00:26:19.744
He had deliberately invited it.

00:26:19.835 --> 00:26:23.085
In fact, though it came so much more quickly than he expected.

00:26:23.454 --> 00:26:25.494
That it found him partly unprepared.

00:26:26.144 --> 00:26:32.775
Without stirring from his position he gazed across the table at Floyd's hard set face, replying sternly.

00:26:33.424 --> 00:26:36.125
Your threat is equivalent to a confession.

00:26:36.904 --> 00:26:39.454
You have decided then to fly your true colors.

00:26:39.785 --> 00:26:41.345
That is what I wanted.

00:26:41.994 --> 00:26:42.595
True colors.

00:26:42.595 --> 00:26:43.194
Be hanged.

00:26:43.454 --> 00:26:44.184
snapped Floyd.

00:26:44.424 --> 00:26:49.315
You'll never discover my true colors, Nick Carter, nor get me under your infernal heel.

00:26:49.734 --> 00:26:53.125
Keep your hands where I can see them or you'll get all that's coming to you.

00:26:53.775 --> 00:26:58.605
Nick saw that the hand gripping the weapon was as steady as the voice uttering the threat.

00:26:59.174 --> 00:27:02.835
He saw too, that the scowling rascal meant what he said.

00:27:03.285 --> 00:27:07.845
Though his confederate Sheldon had gone as white and mute as a corpse.

00:27:08.494 --> 00:27:10.025
I shall do nothing to invite a bullet.

00:27:10.025 --> 00:27:10.295
Mr.

00:27:10.295 --> 00:27:10.714
Floyd.

00:27:11.224 --> 00:27:16.265
He coolly answered though watchful to seize the slightest opportunity to reverse the situation.

00:27:16.914 --> 00:27:22.375
I value a whole skin too highly, but matters can not remain where they stand.

00:27:23.025 --> 00:27:25.694
What do you propose doing now that you have held me up?

00:27:26.025 --> 00:27:26.325
And.

00:27:26.491 --> 00:27:28.991
You'll soon see! Snapped Floyd interrupting.

00:27:29.442 --> 00:27:30.912
Then with voice raised.

00:27:31.561 --> 00:27:33.152
Hurry up Martin, get a move on.

00:27:33.392 --> 00:27:33.932
Come here.

00:27:34.582 --> 00:27:37.041
Nick cut him short in characteristic fashion.

00:27:37.321 --> 00:27:40.561
For the hundredth part of a second Floyd's eyes were diverted from him.

00:27:41.132 --> 00:27:43.201
Nick saw the opportunity and seized it.

00:27:43.592 --> 00:27:46.021
He heard hurried steps in an adjoining room.

00:27:46.471 --> 00:27:49.412
He lifted his knees as quick as a flash and upset the table.

00:27:49.561 --> 00:27:55.531
Just as a portiere behind him was cast aside and two brawny, powerful men bounded into the room.

00:27:56.132 --> 00:27:58.201
What followed was of brief duration.

00:27:58.862 --> 00:28:01.231
The table and books went crashing to the floor.

00:28:01.592 --> 00:28:03.872
Sheldon caught the lamp as it was falling.

00:28:04.561 --> 00:28:10.932
Nick reached over the toppling table and with a lightning like move snatched the revolver from Floyd's hand.

00:28:11.301 --> 00:28:16.461
At the same moment, came a blow from behind dealt with the weapon of one of the ruffians who had entered.

00:28:17.031 --> 00:28:19.432
It was impossible for the detective to avoid it.

00:28:19.642 --> 00:28:24.112
It fell squarely on the back of his head, knocking him senseless on the instant.

00:28:24.662 --> 00:28:28.231
He dropped without so much as a groan, face forward on the table.

00:28:28.882 --> 00:28:30.561
Floyd seized the ribbons again.

00:28:31.211 --> 00:28:31.692
Quick.

00:28:31.991 --> 00:28:32.942
He cried fiercely.

00:28:33.311 --> 00:28:34.362
Take him to my room.

00:28:34.672 --> 00:28:36.021
The crash must've been heard.

00:28:36.261 --> 00:28:37.882
Someone may come to investigate it.

00:28:38.362 --> 00:28:40.311
Wait here, Sheldon and explain.

00:28:40.672 --> 00:28:43.192
State that you fell against the table and upset it.

00:28:43.832 --> 00:28:45.082
This way, Martin, this way.

00:28:45.561 --> 00:28:48.951
We must get him out of the house Jim or our game will go by the board.

00:28:49.602 --> 00:28:54.882
Meantime, Nick was hurriedly being removed from the suite through a rear door.

00:28:56.882 --> 00:29:03.092
And that brings us to the end of another thrilling tale from the past, on Forward Into The Past.
